On 21 March the supporters of the Miners will be offered a perfect opportunity to talk to Sergey Kovalyov, an outstanding midfielder of the Miners in the 1990s. The tour will kick off at 12:00.

Interestingly, the alumnus of the training group of the Miners missed even the team’s reserves somehow. Then he served in the Soviet Army and was later discharged, played football as an amateur for the team from Gor’kogo Mine and transferred to Bazhanovets from Makeyevka then. Kovalyov’s way of playing football while on that team attracted Valeriy Yariomchenko, the-then Chief Coach of FC Shakhtar, causing Sergey to return home in 1994.

Several years on, Kovalyov became one of the major players in the squad, he later played as the captain, was capped for the national team of Ukraine, demonstrating good performance. Any footballer could envy both efficiency and effectiveness of the captain of the Miners. As FC Shakhtar player Sergey Kovalyov won the Ukrainian Cup and four silver medals in the National League. The goal hammered by him into the net of Kryvbas, which sealed the win for our side and cleared the way for Shakhtar to UEFA Champions League back in June 2000, has been inarguably most memorable for the fans. Sergey was offered to try himself in the capacity of a football scout with the club when he retired, and in 2005 he entered office as a coach at the Academy of FC Shakhtar.
