Elite Club: Allianz Arena – chameleon-like stadium

The Allianz Arena will be the venue for the approaching 2012 UEFA Champions League Final. Along with its membership in the Elite Club, the top German stadium has another feature common to both stadiums: the Allianz Arena and the Donbass Arena were designed by the same company – ArupSport.
On the outside the Allianz Arena resembles an inflatable boat whose surface is pasted with transparent diamonds on all sides. OSRAM (a subdivision of Siemens AG) and Siteco Beleuchtungstechnik GmbH have fitted the stadium with a unique illumination system. When FC Bayern München plays at the stadium, the diamonds glow with red colour. When TSV 1860 München receives its opponent, the diamonds turn blue. They can also glow with white colour – the colour of the national team of Germany.
The stadium in Munich has a peculiar feature. Its roof retracts like a bellow. A part of it folds up for better sunlight penetration to the pitch.
The tilt angles of the tiers are interesting as well. They virtually coincide with those at the stadium in Donetsk: 24, 30, 34 degrees respectively, which ensures a perfect visibility of the pitch from practically anywhere in the bowl. The Allianz Arenа project cost EUR 280m. The stadium in Munich can justly boast its parking space which is the largest in Europe - 11 thousand cars can be parked there at one time.
There were two stadium-opening matches at the Allianz Arena. The first was played by TSV 1860 München, the second – by FC Bayern München on 30 and 31 May 2005 respectively.
But the most important thing is that the Allianz Arena remains the major sports venue in the country. And it is second to none in Germany.
